{"id":2972,"date":"2022-11-04T08:22:23","date_gmt":"2022-11-04T13:22:23","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/cqfa.quebec\/?p=2972"},"modified":"2022-11-07T08:38:08","modified_gmt":"2022-11-07T13:38:08","slug":"additive-manufacturing-for-consumer-plastic-cable-pulling-tools","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/cqfa.quebec\/en\/additive-manufacturing-for-consumer-plastic-cable-pulling-tools\/","title":{"rendered":"Additive manufacturing for consumer plastic cable pulling tools"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em>PulR Technologies Inc., Coalia (2022).<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"fontstyle0\">Objective<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span class=\"fontstyle0\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span class=\"fontstyle1\">To demonstrate that mass additive manufacturing can be cost-effective for a range of helical grip cable pulling tools with or without connectors (patent pending), providing higher grip strength faster, and at a lower cost.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"fontstyle1\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span class=\"fontstyle0\">Background<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span class=\"fontstyle0\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span class=\"fontstyle3\">The cable pulling tools invented by Edgar Kellems in 1927 are still used by installation contractors in the construction of telecommunication networks. They damage cables with connectors and are very difficult to use when reattaching cascaded cables. Installers are forced to use laborious methods to avoid breaking the connectors. The method also comes with an environmental cost, as the vinyl tape typically used as temporary harnesses is all but impossible to recycle.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"fontstyle3\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span class=\"fontstyle0\">The challenge<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span class=\"fontstyle0\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span class=\"fontstyle3\">Responding to the market\u2019s need by making 10 products marketable in a short period of time: development in the summer of 2022, and market launch the same year in the fall. This will require a transition from the pulling tool\u2019s first generation with a longitudinal clamp, a limited but demonstrated pulling force, injection mouldable, to a technically and commercially viable second generation with a helical grip that provides 25 pounds of pulling force. Parametric design and rapid prototyping, made possible through additive manufacturing, led to a number of optimal F3 configurations (fit, form and function), creating more than 10 products that are sufficiently generic for several other applications (slot pitch, helical slot diameter and quantity, and connector cavity optimization).<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p class=\"link-btn-style btn-yellow\"><a href=\"https:\/\/cqfa.quebec\/en\/etude-de-cas_pulr_ang-2\/\">Read the case study<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>PulR Technologies Inc., Coalia (2022). &nbsp;
