ANALYZE MOLTEN ALUMINUM IN THE BLINK OF AN EYE

It will no longer be necessary to analyze a sample taken from a pool of molten aluminum in a laboratory to know its exact chemical composition. Tecnar has developed a device that plunges its probe into the liquid metal (at 800°C!) to make a spectrometric analysis of its composition in a laser flash.

L’Alulibs works on the principle of Laser-Induced Breakdown Spectroscopy (LIBS), hence its suffix.

In a simplified way, a laser beam vaporizes on the surface of the sample a tiny part of the material which it brings almost instantaneously to a plasma state. As it cools, this plasma produces light emissions that are captured by an optical detector. Their wavelengths are analyzed spectrometrically to identify the chemical elements present.
